Upon coming to Syracuse University as a freshman, I was enrolled in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs with a major in Sociology. Although I loved taking sociology courses and being in the Maxwell School, I was always silently drawn to the Newhouse School and constantly imagined what it would be like to have a major in Advertising , Graphic Design or Public Relations. After taking Communications and Society 107, I knew that my career interests lied within the Newhouse school. I applied to the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications as a first semester sophomore and was declared into the school second semester as an Advertising major. Shortly after entering the Newhouse School, I declared my minor as a Communications and Rhetoric Studies student in the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) school. I've always wanted to be the big sister, but I'm the youngest of 3. I was never exactly able to make decisions around the house, get my ideas across, or even be taken seriously for more than 5 seconds. I was a camp counselor, taught dance, participated in Best Buddies throughout high school, and realized that I
wanted to do anything I could to help children who also weren't able to express themselves as to what they were dealing with in their lives. Upon channeling my interest in working with children as a sleepaway camp counselor, I realized that I served as a role model to them, almost like the big sister I always wanted to be. I was the counselor that my campers could come to when they needed advice, whether it be in the realm of fashion, life, or a serious matter. I am heavily interested in the Newhouse advertising school to learn and master the art of communication, which is integral in advertising, specifically to children.
When looking back on my past experiences with children and linking them to my future career in advertising, it is clear that communicating is the root of effective advertising. With the rising impacts of social media throughout this past decade, it is important for all social media to be a positive place for children through effective and safe advertising. Because I have experience with diverse children from different backgrounds, I look forward to taking the race gender, and media course (COM346) to strengthen my current knowledge.
As a teenager who grew up amid major social media technological advancements, I feel as if I am highly educated on the various dangers and benefits of social media usage and plan on implementing my firsthand experiences into my future career in advertising to make social media a more positive place for all users. I have always been up to date with all social media platforms and consider it something I am very passionate about. When browsing through my various social media platforms, I subconsciously pay close attention to the way certain brands and influencers present themselves online through the choice of their advertising tactics. The power and influence of social media grows stronger each day and I plan to use my experiences to advance the world of social media and advertising, especially to the upcoming generation that is slowly taking over several platforms.
After being the vice president and social media manager for the Best Buddies International program in high school, I thought I was comfortable with my knowledge of advertising and communications, but after being enrolled in COM107 and ADV201 thus far, I have been introduced to the background and tactics of how media operates. My experiences with diversity and inclusion through this program have shaped me as a person and how I perceive things and feel as if it provided me with a firm foundation to further acquire creative skills as an advertising major, with a focus on children’s products and services.
